Cause and Effect

Hi Dr Rivera and my classmates! I hope everyone had a great weekend! This is my second blog for this week. Last Thursday we met at the moodle room and discussed about Writing Cause and Effect.

Causes and effects deal with reasons and results; they are sometimes discussed together and sometimes separately. Like other forms of writing to explain, writing about causes and effects is based on natural thought processes. One useful approach to developing a cause-and-effect analysis is listing. From them you will select the main causes or effects for your paragraph or essay. When we have listed our ideas under causes and effects, we are ready to focus on the causes, on the effects, or, occasionally, on both. Our controlling idea, the topic sentence or the thesis, might be one of the causes.

Writing an Outline

Completing an outline or ontline alternative.

  • consider kinds of causes and effects.

  • evaluate the importance of sequence.

  • introduce ideas and work with patterns.

Considering Kinds of Causes and Effects

  • Primary or Secondary
Primary means "major", and secondary means "minor". A primary cause may be sufficient to bring about the situation (subject).

  • Immediate or Remote
Causes and effects often occur at a distance in time or place from the situation

Evaluating the Importance of Sequence
The sequence in which events occu(red) may or may not be significant.
The order of the causes and effects you discuss in your paper may be based on time, space, emphasis, or a combination.

Introducing Ideas and Working with Patterns

  • Discuss your subject.

  • Indicate whether you will concentrate on causes or effects or combine them

I hope everyone has a great weekend and see you all next week.

Best regards,

Hai, Zhan(Odin)

  1. Hmm.. I notice that you normally don't put any personal things on blogs. I think Dr. Rivera said as long as it's both educational and personal, she won't mind. But if you don't want to then that's cool too haha.

  2. Odin,

Great notes! I'm sure your classmates appreciate the time you've taken to post this, since this is useful information for the test.

    Best regards,
    Dr. Rivera
